After the last "Stick Contest," I made an observation.......The new Ultra Stick is lighter, faster, and more maneuverable than the old Tiger Stick. However the Tiger Stick is way more survivable and durable.
With the Ultra Stick, it almost seemed that if you misjudged your AOA while landing/touching at a high rate of speed, not only did the gear get ripped out, but the entire center section decintagrates!
I've been looking at Don Pruitts' Stick for a while. It looks like it used to be a Tiger Stick, that now has a foam wing and is built like a "TANK!" Six nylon bolts hold the landing gear in place and looks like it's designed to snap off before it damages the center section. Pretty neat I thought, but I decided to re-design and make my own Stick while using the Ultra-Stick as a guide.
First and foremost I did use a Stock Ultra Stick wings, and tail, but the fuse is completely new and my own.
One inch behind the Wing Saddle to the firewall is completely 1/4 light ply build like a tank in the dimensions of the Ultra-Stick. Well, not completely. Just the formers, and sides. The bottom is 1/8 light ply, and the hatch in front of the wing is balsa. The hatch is removable. There is a 1/4 inch reg ply in place inside the fuse where the gear will be supported.
Aft of the wing is 1/8 balsa married to the ply fuse and stock Ultra-Stick tail Section from a previous Stick was used.
The Wing is also from a previous Stick and gas been repaired. The wing fits like a normal Ultra-Stick Wing, however, instead of bolting the wing down, I inserted 1/4 dowel nipples to hold in place and the wing is held down via Rubber Bands.
The gear itself is bolted to a seperate 2 inch X 6 inch piece of 1/4 ply that has 1/4 inch dowels nipples that fit into the fuse. The assembly is held on via rubber bands.
The hatch has a built in "Bomb Drop" bucket.
"Stick-N-Stein" is ready for test flying.

Very interesting Screw. Sounds like a really nice setup. I've heard people say that you should bolt the gear on the Tiger Stick rather than screwing it on, & then I've seen the whole bottom busted out of the fuse! |

I was wondering if it would be legal. Definitely would for B-class guys like myself, but I know that doesn't matter to you experts! |

Usually if you use nylon bolts the bottom won’t rip out. Are the Ultrasticks using metal bolts and blind nuts? |

I did introduced "Stick-N-Stein" to Dad this weekend, and he questioned some of my mods, but also said it was legal. Thunder Tiger is no longer making "Tiger Sticks," therefore our "Tiger Stick Contest," has become the "Stick Contest." Any 40 size "Stick" is OK.
My stick weighed in at 5 lbs even and I got a chance to test fly it this weekend. She is a little more sluggish than my Ultra-Stick, but flies real well. Gear stayed on even with a 1/2 throttle landing.
I'm very pleased. When's the next contest anyway? I now have two "Sticks." One for each of ya!

| #11 | Stick-N-Sten, I love that tag, you guys are so funny! I want to join this stick madness. I currently do not own a stick. I visited the SPAD site recently and found a neat design for a spad stick. If I build one of those and put the proper engine on it, can I fly it in "B" class? I bet the SPAD stick would be pretty tough.

Yes sir. Come get you some. The Stick contests that we have were conceived to improve pilot skill. Most of the events are oriented around the "Touch & Go" and a stop watch.
As time goes on and practice, practice, practice. You would be amazed at yourself.
